In defence of staying unresolved: 365 ways not to live your life.

I was less concerned this year with it being a New Year and more the fact that this year I turn 25. That horrifying point where you’re closer to being 30 than you are to being a teenager. That mortifying reality that sooner or later everyone is gonna expect you to stop wearing converse on a night out, to stop making out with strangers, to stop eating mcdonalds and get your shit together. The first of my friends are starting to get married, people I went to school with are hatching offspring, people I’ve known forever have the word ‘senior’ in their job titles and I’m super happy for all of them but me…well I look at my cousins new born baby with certain dread and absolute certainty that the only way I will ever produce one of those is if my loins ever have a fortuitous run in with Ryan Gosling or maybe that dude that plays Captain America or any of the cast of the avengers really…well Scarlett Johannson could prove a difficult one but damn it I’d give it the old college try.

So here we are 2013, the world didn’t end and everyone renewed with the momentum of a brand new year and yano surviving the threat of the apocalypse are making with their resolutions. I’m not making any resolutions this year and I’m sure your thinking surely if any one should be making a resolution it’s a hotel bartender who writes in the middle of the night and still doesn’t open her bank statements or any of her mail for that matter. Well riddle me this, did anybody ever think that maybe, just maybe being unresolved is a good thing?

We were all brought up to believe that if you stuck in at school you’d go to university, graduate with honours and land your dream job before falling hopelessly in love and settling into your 2.4 family. Well I graduated in 2010 and let’s face it that is a dead ideal for past generations and it just doesn’t fit anymore. Sure the recession kicked the shit out of us and a lot of people my age aren’t where they want to be but the world has opened up limitlessly. We can do anything we want. We can do the things we were scared to dream we could do.

So all these people telling us what we should do, they shaped a world where we just can’t do it. They fucked the economy and us with it. So do the things your not meant to…at least in the traditional sense.

The greatest days are the in between days, the ones that happen by accident, the ones without a plan in sight. The most fun I’ve ever have is from doing stuff I’ve been told not to. We’re not all wried this way but some of us are. I am. The greatest times I’ve ever had is right after I’ve broken up with somebody I thought I wanted and realising just how much fun you can have when you don’t tie yourself to anything or anyone and most of all that includes the self imposed restrictions and rules something like a New Year’s resolution impose. The anecdotes you tell your grandkids, your fondest memories are all going to come from those unexpected between days. Who defines success anyway, what is success? Let’s charge blindingly into the realms of hedonism and let’s never fucking well look back.

If resolve was that easy why haven’t you done it by now? New Year’s Resolutions make people lazy. It’s the same attitude as ‘I’ll start my diet on Monday’ or ‘I’ll go to the gym tomorrow’. It’s procrastination and procrastination is essentially the process of not living your life. Arguably enough, if you really wanted to change something about your life…you would. It’s that simple. Why wait once a year to get it done. In the words of the great Philosopher and one of the the 20^th centuries greatest minds Yoda: “There is no try there is only do” So freaking do it.

Resolutions /being resolved is boring and no one believes you. Take this one from the Mayans, resolutions are like rules and rules are like prophecies and all of these things are meant to broken and when they break you pretty much end up looking like you have shit on your face, oops. No one will ever believe that you don’t want more, because when we stop wanting, we stop striving and when we stop striving we stop living and everyone wants to be alive.

This is why I pose that you do one unexpected, unreasonable and unjustifiable thing ever single day. Stay unresolved. Stay Crazy. Stay Free.

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower: Film Review

The Perks of being a Wallflower is that rare thing; a book to film adaptation whereby the film is equally as good as the book. Adapted for the screen and directed by the novel’s author Stephen Chobsky it lends the much needed authenticity to make this firm teen cult classic every bit as heartfelt and as moving as the much loved book.

Perks is the story of Charlie a troubled high school freshman who although intelligent and articulate struggles to fit in and cope with life as a teenager in general. Played to avail by the eternally adorable Logan Lerman, he brings Charlie to life as the sweet, vulnerable wallflower we can all relate to. The story follows Charlie as he finds friendship with fellow misfits in the unconventional Brother/Sister duo of Patrick and Sam (Played by Ezra Miller and Emma Watson). Ezra Miller is captivating as the lovelorn Patrick, struggling with his relationship with closeted football player Brad and somehow manages to make us forget all about his previous disturbing role in ‘We need to talk about Kevin’. Emma Watson effortlessly shrugs off Hermione Grainger to encompass the sexy yet damaged but altogether alluring Sam who’s character is as heart-wrenching and three dimensional as in the book . It’s Sam who raises the most important question of both the book and the film: “Why do I and all the people I love, choose people that treat us like we’re nothing?” The answer: “We accept the love that we think we deserve.”

Altogether it’s a touching tale of the discovery of books and music, of drugs and sex, of that unforgettable first love and of ultimately feeling ‘Infinite’. It’s about having your world irrevocably opened up in the most unexpected ways. This film too is unexpected. In a world of Hollywood adaptions diluted by the likes of the Twilight Saga, finally comes a coming of age tale for the intelligent teen.
